Civilian James McWhinney was a fatal casualty of the Belfast Blitz during the Second World War. He lived with his parents Joseph McWhinney Sr. and Bridget McWhinney, sisters Eileen McWhinney and Mary McWhinney, and brother Joseph McWhinney Jr. at 22 Unity Street, Belfast at the time of the Luftwaffe attack on the city.
