He lived with his wife Susannah Hope Donnelly, and children Susannah Donnelly, Thomas Donnelly, Arthur Donnelly, Annie Donnelly, Maggie Donnelly, and Robert Moorhead Donnelly at 23 Hogarth Street, Belfast at the time of the Luftwaffe attack on the city.
