She lived with her parents Joseph McWhinney Sr. and Bridget McWhinney, sister Eileen McWhinney, and brothers Joseph McWhinney Jr. and James McWhinney at 22 Unity Street, Belfast at the time of the Luftwaffe attack on the city.
