Sergeant Pauline Ann Bromwich served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service during the Second World War. She was born in Coventry, Warwickshire, England. Bromwich enlisted in the Auxiliary Territorial Service prior to the outbreak of the Second World War, having lived in Belfast for over 8 years.
On 17th March 1942, as part of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, she received a certificate for bravery shown following an air raid during the Belfast Blitz. Brigadier P.H. Hansen V.C., D.S.O. presented the certificates to Bromwich and to Lance Sergeant Lisle Croasdaile Chute at Dunmore Park Barracks, Belfast.
Pauline served as a Cook in the A.T.S. During the Belfast Blitz, her cookhouse sustained heavy damage. Bromwich and her fellow cooks established field kitchens despite having all their equipment and utensils destroyed. They were in place to provide breakfast and further hot meals for the Battalion throughout the day.
